Meter base
A meter base, also called a meter socket, is the weatherproof box on the outside wall that holds the utility meter.
Oncor defines a meter socket as a receptacle of weatherproof construction used for mounting a socket type meter. The U.S. Energy Information Administration notes that meters are usually on the outside of the building where the power line connects. The meter counts energy in kilowatt-hours.
The utility sets the meter, and seals protect the live parts. Do not break a seal or open the socket. A cracked, loose or scorched base needs the utility and a licensed electrician. A service upgrade often replaces it. See panel upgrades and the Oncor meter disconnect.
