What does an electrical panel do?
An electrical panel is a metal box with rows of circuit breakers. Each breaker protects one circuit in your home. A large main breaker controls power to the whole panel. When a circuit draws too much current, its breaker trips and cuts power. Do not open the panel yourself.
How do I know if my panel needs repair or replacement?
Watch for the warning signs. NFPA says to call a qualified electrician for frequent blown fuses or tripping breakers, warm outlets, flickering lights or sparks. ESFI says flickering lights and warm outlets can point to a serious wiring problem. An electrician has to inspect the panel to decide between repair and replacement. See our guides to electrical panel replacement and electrical warning signs.
Not always. DOE says an electrician can tell you whether your home has enough capacity for a charger, and can add circuits when it does. The same check applies to a remodel or an addition. Ask for a load calculation, and see EV charging station installation and service upgrade.
Questions about electrical panel repair and replacement
Daniel Electric does not post prices, and we will not guess. The quote depends on the size of the panel, the condition of the wiring, whether a service upgrade or meter work is needed, your city's permit rules and how easy the panel is to reach. Call (817) 481-8606 for a quote.
Can a panel be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes. A loose connection or a failed breaker may be fixed without a new panel. A damaged panel, an unsafe brand or not enough capacity usually points to replacement. We inspect first and tell you which applies.
What should I do if my panel smells like burning?
Do not open it. If you can do it safely, switch off the main breaker. Leave the house and call 911 if you see smoke or flames. Otherwise call (817) 481-8606 right away. Do not use circuits that run through a panel that feels hot.
Is a new panel under warranty?
Daniel Electric's warranty page gives a one year warranty on workmanship and a 3 year warranty on electrical parts. Light bulbs and other non-durable parts are not covered, and other limits apply. Read the full terms on our warranty page. A panel maker's own warranty is separate.
