Panels and service
Federal Pacific panel
A Federal Pacific panel is an older electrical panel made by Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) that uses Stab-Lok breakers.
The CPSC closed a two-year investigation of FPE Stab-Lok breakers in 1983 because the data then available did not establish a serious risk of injury. Its testing did confirm that these breakers fail certain UL calibration test requirements. The agency says it made no determination on the safety of FPE breakers.
A licensed electrician can check whether a breaker panel is an FPE model and advise on replacement. See Stab-Lok for the breaker name. The CPSC advice still applies: find out why a circuit breaker trips. See Federal Pacific panels and aluminum wiring.
