How often should I replace smoke alarms?

NFPA says to replace a smoke alarm 10 years after its manufacturing date, and to test every alarm at least once a month. If an alarm fails the test, change the battery, or replace the whole unit if it is old. Some older advice says five years. NFPA's guidance is 10. See our guide to smoke and CO alarms.

Where do smoke and CO alarms go?

NFPA says to install smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. CPSC says CO alarms go on each level and outside sleeping areas. See the smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector entries.

What does interconnected mean?

Interconnected alarms are linked, so when one sounds, they all sound. NFPA says this can be done with hard-wiring or wireless technology. See interconnected alarms and hardwired smoke alarms. Battery alarms are easy to add and keep working in an outage. Ask which type suits your home.

What should I do when an alarm sounds?

If a smoke alarm sounds and you see or smell smoke, get everyone out and call 911 from outside. If an alarm only chirps, test it, then change the battery or replace the unit, as NFPA describes. Hardwired units are installed by an electrician. Do not open or rewire one yourself.

Do businesses need alarms too?

Yes. Your building's fire code and fire marshal set the rules, so ask them what applies. Daniel Electric works on commercial buildings too. See commercial electrician for what we offer. Keeping alarms tested and replaced also helps you keep good records.

Can you install Nest smoke detectors?

Daniel Electric says it installs smart Nest smoke detectors, which include carbon monoxide detection. Ask us whether a smart model, a hardwired alarm or a battery alarm fits your home.

How often should I test my alarms?

Test every smoke alarm at least once a month with the test button. Test CO alarms the same way, using the maker's instructions. Replace any smoke alarm 10 years after its manufacturing date.

Do I need both smoke and CO alarms?

They detect different dangers. A smoke alarm senses fire. A CO alarm senses carbon monoxide, which has no smell or color. Some units combine both. Combination alarms often wear out sooner than 10 years, so check the label.

Does Daniel Electric do alarm repair?

Yes. Daniel Electric lists testing, repair, new alarms and replacement for smoke and CO detectors. Call (817) 481-8606 and tell us which alarms you have.
