What is your electrical system doing?
Flip the breaker that matches what you see. You get the usual causes, what you can safely check yourself, and who fixes it.
Safety first. Keep away from anything hot, sparking or smelling of burning, and call a licensed electrician now. If you see smoke or fire, get out and call 911.
Circuit 01
Breaker keeps tripping
Common causes
- Too many devices on one circuit, which overloads it
- A faulty appliance or cord that trips the circuit each time
- A worn breaker or a loose connection inside the panel
What you can safely check
- Note which room tripped and what was running at the time
- Unplug any appliance that seems to trigger it, and leave it unplugged
- If it trips again with nothing plugged in, leave it off and call a licensed electrician
Circuit 02
Lights flicker or dim
Common causes
- A loose bulb, or a worn dimmer or fixture
- A large appliance pulling power when it starts
- A loose connection in a fixture, an outlet or the panel
What you can safely check
- Check that the bulb is the right type and wattage for the fixture, and screw it in snugly
- Note whether it is one fixture, one room or the whole house
- If you also hear buzzing or smell burning, treat it as urgent and call
Circuit 03
Outlet or switch is warm or buzzing
Common causes
- A loose or worn connection behind the cover plate
- An overloaded circuit, or a plug that fits loosely
- Damaged wiring or an outlet or switch that is failing
What you can safely check
- Turn off the circuit at the breaker if you can do it safely, and call a licensed electrician right away
- Do not use the outlet or switch, and keep cords and anything that burns away from it
- Do not remove the cover plate or touch the wires
Circuit 04
Burning smell or sparks
Common causes
- Overheated wiring, insulation or a loose connection
- A failing outlet, switch, fixture or appliance cord
- An overloaded or failing panel or breaker
What you can safely check
- Turn off the circuit at the breaker if you can do it safely, and call a licensed electrician right away
- If you see smoke or flames, or the smell is strong, get everyone out and call 911
- Do not open the panel or any cover plate, and do not use the circuit until an electrician checks it
Circuit 05
Power is out in part of the house
Common causes
- A tripped GFCI outlet that also protects other outlets
- A breaker tripped by an overloaded circuit
- A utility outage or a problem with the service to your home
What you can safely check
- Look outside. If neighbors have no power, report it to your utility, and if you see a downed line, stay far away and call 911
- Find the GFCI outlets in bathrooms, the kitchen, the garage and outdoors, unplug the devices, and press RESET
- If the power does not come back, call a licensed electrician
Circuit 06
GFCI will not reset
Common causes
- A damaged appliance or cord causing a ground fault
- Water in an outdoor or damp-area outlet
- A worn-out GFCI that has failed
What you can safely check
- Unplug everything on the GFCI and on any outlets it protects, then press RESET again
- Plug in one device at a time to find the one that trips it, and leave that one unplugged
- Do not remove the cover plate. If it still will not reset, call a licensed electrician
Circuit 07
EV charger trips or will not charge
Common causes
- The charger or car found a fault and stopped the charge
- The circuit is overloaded by other loads, or a breaker tripped
- A worn, loose or overheated outlet, plug or connection
What you can safely check
- Read the charger's status light and manual, and note any fault color or code
- Unplug the charger from the car, wait a minute, and plug it in once more
- If the plug or charger is hot, smells of burning or trips again, stop using it and call
Circuit 08
Parking lot lights are out
Common causes
- Failed lamps, ballasts or LED drivers
- A photocell, timer or control that stopped switching
- A tripped breaker or a wiring fault on the lot circuit
What you can safely check
- Note which poles are dark, when it started, and whether it is one pole, a group or all of them

- GuideElectrical panels and service upgrades: what they are, when to act, and who does whatAn electrical panel splits the power that enters your home into separate circuits and protects each one with a breaker. Repair fits a failed part. Replacement fits an old, damaged, recalled or overloaded panel. A service upgrade raises the power your home can draw. A licensed electrician must do all three.Read the guide
- GuideEV charger installation at home and at work: what to know before you buy or callMost drivers charge at home overnight. Level 1 uses a standard outlet on a dedicated circuit. Level 2 runs on 240 volts and charges faster. Before you buy, have a licensed electrician check your panel capacity, the run to the parking spot, the permit rules and whether an outlet or a hardwired unit fits.Read the guide
- GuideLighting installation and LED retrofits: fixtures, dimmers, outdoor lights and what to check firstA lighting project adds, moves or replaces fixtures, switches and dimmers on a safe circuit. An LED retrofit swaps older lamps or fixtures for LED ones. Check the dimmer, driver and fixture rating first.
