Grapevine Carol of Lights Season: Holiday Lighting Safety

Grapevine's Christmas Capital of Texas season features the Carol of Lights, and many homes join in. Inspect lights and cords for damage, use outdoor-rated products, plug outdoor lights into GFCI-protected circuits, and stay 10 feet from power lines. Call a licensed electrician for any wiring or outlet work.

Every year, Grapevine, Texas lights up for the holidays. The Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau lists the Carol of Lights as a must-do highlight of the Christmas Capital of Texas season, with Historic Main Street glowing with music and lights, and many homes put up their own displays. This post turns safety advice from ESFI and NFPA into a plain checklist for a Grapevine home.

How do I check holiday lights before I hang them?

Inspect everything first. NFPA says to do a visual inspection of the lights, motors, wires, and extension cords. Look for broken lamp sockets, cracked cord covers, and bare wire. ESFI gives the same advice: inspect all lights, decorations, and extension cords for damage before you use them.

Throw out damaged sets. Do not tape or patch a bad cord.

What makes outdoor lights and cords safe?

Use products made for outdoors, and protect the circuit. ESFI says cords and decorations used outdoors must be marked for outdoor use. It also says outdoor lights should plug into circuits protected by a GFCI. NFPA says all receptacles installed outdoors require GFCI protection.

Check Why it matters Source
Light sets and cords marked for outdoor use Indoor-only products are not made for weather ESFI
Plugged into a GFCI-protected outlet Cuts power fast in a ground fault ESFI, NFPA
No more than three incandescent strings connected Avoids overloading the cord ESFI
Cords and plugs free of cracks and bare wire Damaged cords can expose conductors NFPA
10 feet from power lines Avoids contact with the line ESFI

A ground fault is current leaking along an unplanned path. A GFCI senses that and shuts off the circuit.

What if my outdoor outlet has no GFCI?

Do not run a long cord from another room or use a workaround. Have a licensed electrician check the outdoor outlet. Ask about a weather-resistant receptacle for outdoor spots. Our guide to GFCI vs AFCI explains the difference between the two devices.

How do I avoid overloading a circuit with a big display?

ESFI says to avoid overloading outlets with too many decorations or electrical devices, because they can overheat and cause a fire. It also says to match the power needs of each product to the amperage rating of the extension cord. Add up what you plan to plug in before you hang it. A circuit breaker that trips is a warning, not a nuisance, so do not keep resetting it. If a display keeps tripping the breaker, the circuit may not suit the load, and a licensed electrician should look at it. Also plan where each cord will run so that none are pinched in doors or windows.

How close can I get to power lines?

Keep at least 10 feet away. ESFI says to stay at least 10 feet from power lines, for yourself and for your equipment. Ladders and poles near the service line to your house deserve special care. If a display needs work near the lines, hire a professional.

If you see a downed or sagging line, stay back and call 911. Read our post on what to do in a power outage.

Does a large display need a permit or inspection?

Possibly. NFPA says that a few twinkle lights probably need no inspection, but a big display might. It says the local authority having jurisdiction decides, based on the type of lighting, how long the display stays up, and the wiring. For Grapevine, ask Building Services at 817.410.3165. When should I call an electrician for holiday lighting?

Call when the job goes beyond plugging in. Examples:

  1. An outdoor outlet that has no GFCI or does not work.
  2. A breaker that trips when the lights are on.
  3. A new outlet or circuit for a display.
  4. Permanent fixtures such as landscape or security lights.

Frequently asked questions

Do outdoor Christmas lights need a GFCI outlet?

ESFI says outdoor electrical lights and decorations should be plugged into circuits protected by GFCIs. NFPA says all receptacles installed outdoors require GFCI protection. If your outdoor outlet has no GFCI, call a licensed electrician rather than using a workaround.

How many strings of lights can I connect together?

ESFI says to never connect more than three strings of incandescent lights together. Read the label on each set, because limits differ by product. LED strings often have different limits, so follow the maker's instructions on the package.

How close can I get to power lines when hanging lights?

ESFI says to keep yourself and your equipment at least 10 feet from power lines. Use caution with ladders and long poles near the service line to your house. If a display needs work near lines, hire a professional.

Does a big holiday display need an inspection in Grapevine?

NFPA says a large display might need an inspection, and the local authority decides based on the type of lighting, how long it stays up, and the wiring. For a large display in Grapevine, call the city at 817.410.3165 before you build it.
