Interconnected alarms
Interconnected alarms are linked smoke or CO alarms, by wire or radio signal, so that when one sounds, all of them sound.
In a large or multi-level home you may not hear one alarm from another floor. Linking them solves that. The U.S. Fire Administration says to choose interconnected smoke alarms so that when one sounds, they all sound. CPSC says the same for CO alarms.
Links are made by wires between hardwired smoke alarms or by wireless radio. Adding a link in a ceiling box is a job for a licensed electrician. See the smoke alarm entry and smoke and CO detector installation.
