LED Bulbs Flicker or Buzz: Bulb, Dimmer, or Wiring?

LED bulbs flicker or buzz most often because the bulb and the dimmer do not match. Other causes are a loose bulb, a failing driver, or a wiring or connection problem. Swap in a matched bulb first. If several lights flicker or an outlet buzzes, call a licensed electrician.

Why do my LED bulbs flicker or buzz?

The most common cause is a mismatch between the LED bulb and the dimmer. Other causes include a loose bulb, a failing LED driver, a shared circuit with a large load, or a loose connection in the wiring. Start with the simplest cause and move up.

The U.S. Department of Energy notes that when power passes through the various dimmer technologies, “there can be flickering, audible buzzing, non-linear dimming” and more. That is why a bulb can work fine in a plain socket and misbehave on a dimmer.

Symptom Likely cause First step
Flickers only when dimmed Bulb and dimmer switch mismatch Use a bulb labeled dimmable and check the dimmer’s list
Buzzes only when dimmed Dimmer type or bulb driver Try a matched bulb. Ask an electrician about the dimmer
One bulb flickers, no dimmer Loose bulb or a failing bulb Turn off, let it cool, reseat or replace the bulb
Many lights flicker together Circuit or connection issue Call a licensed electrician
Flicker when a big appliance starts Heavy load on a shared circuit Note the pattern and call an electrician
Hot switch, burning smell, sparks Possible damaged connection Turn off if safe and call an electrician or 911

What can I check safely?

You can check the bulb and the label. Do not open the switch, the fixture, or the box. Follow these steps:

  1. Turn the light off and let the bulb cool.
  2. Check that the bulb is firmly seated in the socket.
  3. Look at the bulb’s label. A dimmable LED says so on the package.
  4. If you use a dimmer, look for a compatibility list from the dimmer or bulb maker.
  5. Try the bulb in a lamp with no dimmer. If it still flickers, replace the bulb.

If a matched bulb still flickers or buzzes on the dimmer, a licensed electrician should look at the dimmer. Dimmers made for older bulbs may not suit LEDs.

Can a buzzing sound come from the wiring?

Yes. A buzz from a switch, outlet, or panel can mean a loose or damaged connection. ESFI lists “unusual sizzling and buzzing sounds from your electrical system” among the signs to contact a qualified electrician immediately. Read about a buzzing outlet and flickering lights in our glossary.

Do not wait if the sound comes with heat or a burning smell. Turn off the circuit at the panel only if you can reach it safely, and call a licensed electrician. If you see smoke, call 911.

When do flickering lights point to wiring?

Flicker in several rooms, in lights on one circuit, or in time with a large appliance points to the circuit or its connections. NFPA lists “flickering or dimming lights” among the signs to call a qualified electrician about. A voltage drop or a loose connection can cause this.

Our guide to electrical warning signs lists more. If a breaker also trips, see our post on why a breaker keeps tripping.

Is it time to upgrade the lights?

Maybe. If you are replacing many bulbs, ask about fixtures and dimmers that are made for LEDs. Daniel Electric lists LED lighting installation and lighting installation as services. A matched system of fixture, driver, and dimmer often works better than one-off bulb swaps. Read our page on LED lighting installation and the lighting installation page.

Ask about the warranty before you buy. Daniel Electric’s warranty page says its parts warranty covers LED light bulbs for 1 year after installation, with claims made within the 365 day period. Read the full terms there.

What if only one fixture misbehaves?

If one fixture flickers and the others do not, the cause is likely in that fixture or its bulb. Check the bulb type first. Some fixtures are enclosed, and heat can shorten the life of an LED bulb that is not rated for an enclosed space. Read the label on the bulb and on the fixture.

If a new, matched bulb still flickers in that fixture, stop. The socket, the fixture, or a connection may be at fault. Do not open the fixture. A licensed electrician can test it and repair or replace it. If the fixture is a built-in LED unit with no bulb to change, the driver may be failing. Ask about replacement options, and ask what the warranty covers.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my LED bulb buzz on a dimmer?

The bulb and the dimmer may not be matched. The U.S. Department of Energy says dimmer technologies can cause flickering, audible buzzing, and uneven dimming with LEDs. Check that the bulb is labeled dimmable and that the dimmer lists it as compatible. A licensed electrician can replace the dimmer.

Is a flickering LED bulb dangerous?

A single bulb that flickers is often a bulb problem. But flickering lights can also point to a loose connection. NFPA lists flickering or dimming lights among the signs to call a qualified electrician about. Call if more than one light flickers, or if you smell burning or see sparks.

Can I fix a buzzing light switch myself?

You can swap a bulb, since that is outside the box. Do not open the switch, the box, or the fixture. A buzzing switch or a hot cover plate can mean a loose or damaged connection. Turn off the light and call a licensed electrician.
