Buzzing outlet

A buzzing outlet is a receptacle or switch that hums, crackles or sizzles, which can mean a loose connection or arcing.

Outlets should be silent. A buzz, crackle or sizzle can mean current is jumping a gap at a loose connection. That is arcing. A buzzing outlet is a warning sign, even if everything still seems to work.

ESFI lists cracking, sizzling or buzzing from receptacles among its overloaded circuit warning signs. Stop using the outlet, unplug devices if it is safe, and call a licensed electrician. Do not remove the cover. See hot outlet and electrical warning signs.
