Receptacle
A receptacle is the formal name for the socket in the wall that a plug fits into.
OSHA defines a receptacle as a contact device installed at the outlet for the connection of an attachment plug. A duplex outlet is a multiple receptacle: two or more contact devices on one yoke. Kinds include tamper-resistant and weather-resistant receptacles.
Most people say outlet for both. A loose or warm receptacle, a cracked cover, or a plug that falls out can mean a failing part. Stop using it and call a licensed electrician. See the home electrical safety checklist.
