Ev charging

NEMA 6-50

A NEMA 6-50 is a three-prong, 240 volt, 50 amp outlet with no neutral, used for welders and by some plug-in EV chargers.

The U.S. Department of Energy's multifamily charging guide says low power Level 2 chargers use a NEMA 6-50 outlet receptacle, and Level 2 chargers can use a variety of 30 or 50 amp NEMA receptacle types. A 6-50 has no neutral, so it suits chargers that only need 240 V.

Compare it with the NEMA 14-50, which adds a neutral. Either outlet must sit on a correctly sized dedicated circuit. Matching the plug, wire and breaker is work for a licensed electrician. See EV charging station installation.
