Hardwired charger
A hardwired charger connects directly to the circuit wiring with no plug and outlet, so the charger is fixed in place.
The U.S. Department of Energy says Level 2 chargers can be hardwired into the building electrical supply or plugged into a 240V outlet. A hardwired unit is fixed to the wall and wired to a dedicated circuit. No receptacle is involved.
Some owners prefer it because no plug and outlet, such as a NEMA 14-50, sit in the power path. Others prefer a plug for flexibility. Either way, a licensed electrician should size the circuit to the charger's rating. See EV charging station installation.
