Switch box
A switch box is the enclosure in the wall that holds a switch and the wire ends behind it.
OSHA describes a general-use snap switch as one built to be installed in device boxes or on box covers. In finished work, OSHA says each outlet box shall have a cover, faceplate or fixture canopy. The box keeps live parts enclosed and holds the switch steady.
A missing or cracked faceplate, or a box that feels hot, should be fixed. A junction box holds splices, while a switch box holds a device such as a dimmer switch. Call a licensed electrician for repairs. See electrical warning signs.
