Junction box
A junction box is a covered enclosure where wires join or split. The cover keeps the connections protected.
OSHA requires pull boxes, junction boxes and fittings to have covers identified for the purpose, and metal covers must be grounded. A junction box holds wire splices so they are not loose in a wall, ceiling or attic.
The CPSC notes that connections at junction boxes are one place where aluminum-wire hazards occur. See aluminum wiring. A missing cover, a hot box or a splice outside a box is a hazard. Call a licensed electrician. A switch box is similar. See electrical warning signs.
