Splice
A splice is a joint where two or more wires are permanently joined so that current can pass from one to the other.
Splices belong inside a junction box or other enclosure and are made with a listed connector, such as a wire nut. OSHA's rule says conductors shall be spliced or joined with splicing devices identified for the use, or by brazing, welding, or soldering.
Homemade splices outside a box are a hazard. CPSC reports that aluminum-wired connections and splices have been reported to fail and overheat without any prior warning. Because a bad splice can hide in a wall or box, ask a licensed electrician to find and fix one. The residential electrician page lists related service.
