If you plan to add an outlet, a light, or a circuit at your Keller, Texas home, the City of Keller has plain rules on permits. This post shares what the city says on its Construction Tips page, who should pull the permit, and who answers for inspections. Keller does not have its own service area page on our site, so see our service areas for the cities we cover.
Do I need a permit for electrical work in Keller?
Often, yes. Keller says a permit is needed for all new construction, and that an electrical permit may be needed for any addition or change to an existing system. The city’s own example is that moving or adding an electrical outlet requires a permit.
To find out about your job, Keller asks you to call Building Services at 817-743-4110. The page says each project is unique.
What electrical jobs does Keller say need a permit, and which do not?
Keller gives a short list. The table below uses only what the city wrote.
| Job | What Keller says |
|---|---|
| Moving or adding an outlet | Requires a permit |
| Adding a permanently wired light fixture | Requires a permit |
| Replacing a switch | Does not normally require a permit |
| Moving an electrical circuit | Minor work; permits may be issued over the counter |
“Does not normally” is not “never.” Call before you assume. A dedicated circuit for a new appliance or an EV charger is a new circuit, so ask the city about it.
Who should pull the permit in Keller?
Keller says contractors should obtain the permits. The homeowner can also obtain the permit if doing the work themself. Texas law adds a license rule, though. TDLR says non-exempt electrical work in Texas must be done by a licensed person working through a licensed electrical contractor.
When you hire out the work, ask the electrician to name who pulls the permit. Our guide to hiring a licensed electrician explains what to check.
Where do I get an electrical permit in Keller?
Keller says construction permits are issued by Building Services at Keller Town Hall, 1100 Bear Creek Pkwy. For minor work, such as moving an electrical circuit, the city says permits may be issued over the counter, or pulled online. Some projects need plans left for added review, so a return trip may be needed. Call 817-743-4110 for information or an appointment. Ask the city, or your electrician, which path fits your job before you plan your day around it. Bring the address, a short description of the work, and the name of your electrician when you call, so staff can answer quickly and correctly.
Who is responsible for electrical inspections in Keller?
You are, in the end. Keller says the permit holder must call for inspections at set points in the project. Even if you hire a contractor, the city says it is the property owner’s responsibility to make sure inspections are made. A project is not complete for legal purposes until it passes final inspection.
Keller also says permits generally expire after 180 days if no inspections have been made. If that happens, call Building Services. A passed electrical inspection is your proof the work was checked.
Which electrical code does Keller list?
Keller’s codes page lists the 2020 National Electrical Code as currently in effect. Texas adopted the 2026 NEC as the state code, effective September 1, 2026. Because city pages can lag behind, the city’s page lists the 2020 NEC today. Ask Building Services which edition applies to your permit. Our post on the Southlake process shows a similar path in a neighboring city.
What happens if I skip the permit?
Keller says you will face fines and penalties. You must also obtain the permits for the work, and it must pass inspection. If it does not, you must return the structure or site to its original condition. Ask first. See our glossary entry on electrical permits.
