Type 2 SPD

A Type 2 SPD installs on the load side of the main breaker, at the panel, to protect against internal surges and leftover surge energy.

Leviton describes Type 2 devices as giving the same protection as Type 1 but mounted on the load side of an electric service panel. They guard against residual lightning energy, motor-driven surges and other surges made inside the building. Type 2 devices can also be tiered on branch circuits for added protection.

Compare a Type 1 SPD, which goes ahead of the main breaker. Both are kinds of surge protective device. Work inside a panel is for a licensed electrician. See whole-house surge protector installation.
