Transformer

A transformer is a device that changes electric voltage from one level to another, such as from the lines on the street to service voltage.

OSHA's glossary says distribution transformers reduce the voltage of the primary circuit to the voltage required by customers. The gray box on the ground or the can on a pole near a building is usually one of these.

The same glossary notes three-phase pad mounted transformers serve underground primary circuits. Utilities usually own and service outdoor transformers, up to the service drop or service lateral. Never touch one. See Oncor.
