# Whole-house generator

A whole-house generator is a permanently installed, engine-driven unit that powers part or all of a home's circuits when utility power fails.

Also called a [standby generator](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/standby-generator), it sits outside and connects to the home's wiring through a [transfer switch](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/transfer-switch). The switch keeps generator power from flowing back onto utility lines. CoServ says member generator installations must meet all local, municipal, NESC and NEC regulations.

A permanent generator needs correct sizing, a fuel supply, permits and the utility's approval. Ask a licensed electrician about each step before you buy. Run any generator only outdoors and away from windows. See [emergency electrical help](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/guides/emergency-electrical-help).
