# Switch box

A switch box is the enclosure in the wall that holds a switch and the wire ends behind it.

OSHA describes a general-use snap switch as one built to be installed in device boxes or on box covers. In finished work, OSHA says each outlet box shall have a cover, faceplate or fixture canopy. The box keeps live parts enclosed and holds the switch steady.

A missing or cracked faceplate, or a box that feels hot, should be fixed. A [junction box](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/junction-box) holds splices, while a switch box holds a device such as a [dimmer switch](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/dimmer-switch). Call a licensed electrician for repairs. See [electrical warning signs](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/guides/electrical-warning-signs).
