# Service upgrade

A service upgrade raises the amount of power a building can draw from the utility, usually with a new panel, meter base and service wires.

Upgrades often follow new loads such as an addition, a hot tub or an EV charger. Oncor says the utility gives a service availability statement. It names the meter location, the type of service and the capacity of the service to be provided. A [load calculation](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/load-calculation) shows what size the building needs.

The work touches the [meter base](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/meter-base), the [electrical panel](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/electrical-panel), a permit and utility coordination. A licensed electrician should handle all of it. See [panel repair and replacement](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/electrical-panel-repair-replacement).
