# Romex

Romex is a brand name for NM-B cable, the plastic-jacketed cable used for most branch circuits inside homes.

Romex is Southwire's trade name for nonmetallic-sheathed cable. Many people use the word for any NM-B cable. Southwire says NM-B cable is primarily used in residential wiring as branch circuits for outlets, switches and other loads, with a voltage rating of 600 volts.

See [NM-B cable](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/nm-b-cable) for the technical name. Southwire says it may be used for exposed and concealed work in dry locations. Wet or buried runs need other types, such as [direct burial cable](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/direct-burial-cable). Sizes follow [wire gauge](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/wire-gauge). A licensed electrician should run or repair it.
