# Receptacle

A receptacle is the formal name for the socket in the wall that a plug fits into.

OSHA defines a receptacle as a contact device installed at the outlet for the connection of an attachment plug. A duplex outlet is a multiple receptacle: two or more contact devices on one yoke. Kinds include [tamper-resistant](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/tamper-resistant-receptacle) and [weather-resistant](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/weather-resistant-receptacle) receptacles.

Most people say [outlet](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/outlet) for both. A loose or warm receptacle, a cracked cover, or a plug that falls out can mean a failing part. Stop using it and call a licensed electrician. See the [home electrical safety checklist](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/guides/home-electrical-safety-checklist).
