# PVC conduit

PVC conduit is rigid plastic tubing that protects wire. It is used outdoors and underground because it does not rust.

Carlon says its Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 conduits are designed for use above ground and underground as described in the National Electrical Code. Schedule 40 is listed for direct burial and for concrete-encased runs. Schedule 80 has a thicker wall.

PVC is one kind of [conduit](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/conduit). Oncor's guidelines do not accept PVC for a mast that supports the service drop. They allow it for a mast that does not, unless the local inspector prohibits it. Burial depth and type follow code. See [direct burial cable](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/direct-burial-cable) for the no-conduit option. Hire a licensed electrician.
