# Load management

Load management is a control system that limits or shifts power use so several loads, such as EV chargers, stay within the capacity of a circuit or panel.

The U.S. Department of Energy says smart chargers can monitor the total electrical load across multiple chargers and limit their power draw to stay within the allotted amperage of the circuit or panel they share. These are called automated load management systems.

In some cases this lets a home or building add chargers without a bigger panel or service. A [load calculation](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/load-calculation) shows what spare capacity exists. A licensed electrician decides what fits your site. See [EV charging station installation](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/ev-charging-station-installation) and [service upgrade](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/service-upgrade).
