# Hardwired charger

A hardwired charger connects directly to the circuit wiring with no plug and outlet, so the charger is fixed in place.

The U.S. Department of Energy says Level 2 chargers can be hardwired into the building electrical supply or plugged into a 240V outlet. A hardwired unit is fixed to the wall and wired to a [dedicated circuit](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/dedicated-circuit). No receptacle is involved.

Some owners prefer it because no plug and outlet, such as a [NEMA 14-50](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/nema-14-50), sit in the power path. Others prefer a plug for flexibility. Either way, a licensed electrician should size the circuit to the charger's rating. See [EV charging station installation](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/ev-charging-station-installation).
