In Southlake, call Building Inspections at (817) 748-8236 before electrical work to ask if it needs a permit. Electrical work in Southlake, Texas often starts with one question: do I need a permit? The City of Southlake does not list every job on its public pages, so the safest answer is to ask. This post explains how the city’s permit, registration, and inspection process works and what to ask before work begins.

## Who do I call to find out if my Southlake electrical job needs a permit?

Call Southlake Building Inspections at (817) 748-8236. The city asks anyone with questions about permits, inspections, or contractor registration to use that number. The office sits at 1400 Main Street, Suite 250.

An [electrical permit](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/electrical-permit) is the city’s record that planned work will be checked against the adopted code. A permit usually leads to an [electrical inspection](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/electrical-inspection) once the work is done. Because the city’s pages do not list each job, do not guess. Describe the work and ask.

## How does Southlake handle permits and inspections?

Southlake runs permitting and inspections through an online system. Contractors create an account in that system to register and apply for permits. The city says it tries to complete inspections on the day requested when the request comes in by 7:00 a.m. Some residential inspections can use photos, such as for an electric water heater, if the contractor sends them as PDF files.

## Do electricians have to register with the City of Southlake?

Yes. The city says trade contractors with a current state license must register and give details on both the contractor and the license holder. That is on top of the state license. Under Texas law, a person doing non-exempt electrical work must be licensed and work through a licensed electrical contractor, per TDLR. The [TDLR](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/tdlr) license is the state side. City registration is the local side.

Ask your electrician for both. Our guide to [hiring a licensed electrician in Texas](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/guides/hire-a-licensed-electrician-texas) lists what to check, including a master electrician on the job.

## Which electrical code applies in Southlake?

The code is the [NEC](https://danielelectric.multisites.ai/glossary/nec), also called NFPA 70. Southlake’s building codes page says the city adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code through Ordinance No. 1280 on November 7, 2023. Separately, TDLR adopted the 2026 NEC as the state electrical code, effective September 1, 2026.

City pages can lag behind state changes, so the city’s page lists the 2023 NEC today. Do not assume which edition applies to your permit. Ask Building Inspections, and ask your electrician which edition the plans follow.

## Can I do the electrical work myself?

State law has a narrow exemption. Texas Occupations Code Chapter 1305 exempts work “not specifically regulated by a municipal ordinance” on a dwelling when the person owns and lives in it. The key words are “not specifically regulated by a municipal ordinance.” Southlake’s public pages do not set out a homeowner rule, so call the city first.

Even where it is allowed, panel and service work carries shock and fire risk. Anything inside a panel, outlet box, or fixture is a job for a licensed electrician.

## What should I ask before work starts?

Use this short list:

1. Does this job need a permit in Southlake?
2. Is the electrician licensed in Texas and registered with the city?
3. Which NEC edition will the plans follow?
4. Who requests the inspection, and who gets the result?
5. What does the written quote cover?
